VinCanta in Canelli

There is always a festival on somewhere and a reason to celebrate!

Recently we joined some Swiss friends for VinCanta, one of the region’s annual festivals. Festivals usually do the rounds of several villages and as we don’t know Canelli very well, we chose to join the celebrations there this year.

VinCanta is celebrated in the old town where about 5 of the larger piazzas are turned into enormous pedestrian areas, filled with food stalls boasting beautiful local produce, wine tents, cocktail bars, bands playing great music and huge crowds. Italians aren’t generally quiet people and if there’s a party to be had, they jump in with gusto! This proved to be exactly true at this year’s VinCanta. They also love to include their dogs in absolutely everything so there were almost as many dogs as people attending the party.

We were lucky enough to snag a table very close to a wine tent and some food stalls but also far enough away to be able to hear each other speak while enjoying a great band singing all the oldies. Our table was completely surrounded by people enjoying the night and there was dancing in every conceivable space. The gnocchi tasted like it was poached in a local blue cheese, the farinata was just perfect, the cocktails huge and colourful and the local wines, which are always a pleasure to try, went down exceptionally well.

It was another gorgeous, warm Summer’s evening spent with friends and their puppy. I can’t spell the furry one’s name but her nickname is Foffa. She managed to keep quite a few families entertained with her antics while we enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere.

VinCanta is definitely on the calendar for next year.

In Canelli, VinCanta is usually held around the end of June. This year it was from 24 - 26 June.

Canelli is in the Province of Asti and Region of Piemonte. For more information on VinCanta and Canelli; Municipality of Canelli Events Office Telephone 0141/820237
